After our visit to the 4th graders at Horicon Elementary School, COVID shut everything down, and sadly the children were not able to take their birding boat trip on the Horicon Marsh. Instead we gifted these lovely journals and bird ID cards they may use to explore the Marsh with their families.

One of the nature adventures Ilan loved most was birding. He enjoyed spying the Bald Eagles and the Great Blue Herons from a pontoon boat on the Horicon Marsh. Although the students who attend Van Brunt school live next to the largest freshwater cattail marsh in the United States, many of them haven’t been exposed to all the wonders of the marsh. 5 Purple Oranges also supplied the children binoculars so they could get the most out of their experience.

5 Purple Oranges sponsored a Teacher Fellowhip for the Howards Grove Middle School to create lesson plans for the Lenore Tawney exhibition series, Mirror of the Universe. The students spent a day at the Arts Center, viewing the textile works of Lenore Tawney, then creating weavings using meaningful, personal items. Then the students physically connected their art in a unique design after creating personal connections. Teachers also provided a cross-curricular lesson incorporating the language arts classroom, where students designed little books of art containing their “I Am” statements, inspired by Lenore Tawyner’s life. Student work will be displayed in the Community Gallery in 2020.

Exhibition Artists-in-Residence (ExAIR) offers students exciting opportunities to meet and work with renowned artists exhibiting at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. Participants learn more about the art in the galleries and explore the creative process with the artists. 5 Purple Oranges gifted funds to JMKAC to have Maggie Sasso, the ExAIR artist Winter 2018-2019 visit Riverview middle school in Plymouth, WI, where she presented an explanation of her textile work creating patches. The children drew designs for their own buttons and patches, some were displayed at the JMKAC in the Summer, and every child was gifted a button of their own design.
